Unrecognised women in history

For this ISTD project I chose The ‘unrecognized women in history’ to highlight and explore my Grandmother Elizabeth Barnes. She was an accomplished woman who grafted through a lot throughout her lifetime. In her younger years studying medicine and living through World War II, to working in Africa with people suffering from leprosy.

When I first set out to design this project I wanted the viewer to be brought through Elizabeth’s journey from England to Africa. I began to orientate my design around travel. So I began with the possibility of explaining her life typographically on a passport. I explored this idea in a few different ways by using passport stamps and maps. Bringing the design further I created a type of journal setting consisting with images, illustrations and type.

During the time around the war, the type used for transcripts was that of a typewriter so the font used was courier prime which expresses this. I used a box in this design to represent a stationary set that may have been sent overseas to document travel and experiences. The size of the manuscript was 149 by 225 similar size to a journal and stationary set. I used brown paper to give off the impression of old paper that they may have used at that time.
